Ehon (Picture Books) of Edo (3)
Ehon of Edo from the Kansei to Kyowa era
The strict conservative measures implemented as part of the Kansei Reforms in 1791 impacted the publishing world, making it difficult to publish sophisticated and sumptuous illustrated books of the style represented by the works of Utamaro Kitagawa. The most severe damage was incurred by Juzaburo Tsutaya, a renowned hanmoto (publisher) of the Edo period, who was fined half his fortune for publishing sharebon (books about humor and entertainment in the pleasure districts) by the author Kyoden Santo. Since Tsutaya was the main driving force behind the publishing of sumptuous illustrated books, his punishment inevitably terminated this line of publications. After July 1793, when the chief promoter of the Kansei Reforms, Sadanobu Matsudaira, fell from power, however, signs of gradual recovery of the genre appeared, resulting in the publication of the Ryakuga-shiki (“Simplified Drawing Styles”) series by Keisai Kuwagata, a predecessor to Hokusai Katsushika’s Hokusai Manga (“Hokusai’s Sketches”), in the late Kansei period (from around 1790 through 1801). After the era changed and Kyowa commenced, publishing of illustrated books gained momentum once again, and, as an author of illustrated books, Hokusai Katsushika sent out into the world numerous masterpieces.
Under this heading, Ehon (Picture Books) of Edo (3), ehon in the period after the Kansei Reforms through the Kyowa era (1801 – 1804) are presented. Artists include Shunman Kubo (1757–1820), Shunsho Katsukawa (?–1694), Keisai Kuwagata (also known as Masayoshi Kitao, 1664–1729), Hokusai Katsushika (1686–1764), and Utamaro Kitagawa (1671–1750).
Ehon, as referred to here, are picture books printed from woodblocks (as a general rule excluding those with hand-drawn illustrations) that were produced in the Edo period (1603–1868) for the illustrations contained within to be enjoyed. While there are many books making abundant use of illustrations, such as novels, including kibyoshi (illustrated storybooks with yellow covers), and practical works such as cookbooks, for all these, the text is primary and the illustrations ancillary. Accordingly, such works are generally not included in the category of ehon.
