彩色摺絵入狂歌本。天保11年（1840）刊。 芍薬亭長根 （しゃくやくていながね） 序。東嶺庵 （とうれいあん） 等編。狂歌師の図を葛飾北斎の弟子魚屋北渓（ととやほっけい）が、風景画を広重が担当して描いている。

魚を主題にした揃物のシリーズ画。天保３年(1832)頃に、西村屋与八が出版した狂歌入りの注文制作のシリーズを一般用の販売作品としたもの。掲出本は、シリーズのうちの12枚を綴じまとめて製本したもの。巻頭に、明治から昭和時代前期にかけての植物学者、伊藤篤太郎（いとうとくたろう）の自筆で「魚学ノ参考書トシテ裨益アルベシ」と記されている。

広重によるスケッチ集。収納の木箱と包紙に「真写諸品図会　初代広重草稿」と墨書、「木下氏正□蔵書之印」の朱印がある。鳥、虫、馬などのスケッチや人物の似顔、戯画などから成る。直接描かれたものと紙を貼りつけた部分とが混じる。

一立斎広重＜歌川広重(1世　１７９７生)＞//原稿,写

元来冊子であったものを9枚に分離し、寸法24.1×32.3cmの見開きとして台紙に貼り込んである。元の前表紙と扉は別に保存。東海道の宿場の写生と考えられる。幕末の合巻作者柳下亭種員（りゅうかてい・たねかず。1807-58)の印記がある。

現在の東京都中央区にあたる。東海道の起点・日本橋の朝の景色。朝焼けを背に大名行列が橋を渡り始める様子が窺える。先箱持ちを先頭に毛槍と続き、陣笠の従士たちが整然と列をなしている。手前には魚河岸から帰った魚屋や野菜売り、犬の姿を見ることができる。左右に開いた大木戸の間から覗くような視点が面白く、大木戸の縦格子と毛槍の縦のラインと橋の板目の横のラインが画面に一定のリズムを与え、堅固な構図を作り上げている。

現在の神奈川県横浜市神奈川区にあたる。神奈川台と呼ばれた宿場町の情景。急勾配の上り坂の街道沿いにはずらりと茶屋が並んでいる。店の前には客引きの女たちが並び、通行人を盛んに呼び止めており、手を引かれた旅人とのやり取りには活気が感じられる。手前には六部と呼ばれた巡礼者の姿が見え、目の前の光景をよそに静かに歩を進めている。茶屋の海側には露台が設けてあり、茶屋に入った者だけがその絶景を味わえたことも窺える。

現在の神奈川県小田原市にあたる。遠景の様々な色彩と形で構成された山の表現が斬新に映る。山のふもとには小さく小田原城とその城下の町並みが描かれている。手前を横切る酒匂川は幕府の政策により架橋や渡船が禁止され、川越し人足による徒渡しによって渡る方法しかなかった。ここではふんどし姿となった人足の肩車を使って渡る者や、複数の人足が担ぐ輦台（川を渡すための台）で渡る者など、様々な徒渡しの様子が描かれている。

現在の神奈川県足柄下郡箱根町にあたる。主役の富士を凌駕するように極端に競り立った山が画面中央に描かれ、対照的に白く雪化粧した富士が遠景にひっそり佇んでいる。山間を抜ける細く急勾配な坂道を下る大名行列の姿は「天下の嶮、千尋の谷」と謳われた箱根の峠越えの厳しさを物語っているかのよう。モザイク画を思わせる多彩な山の岩肌の表現と連なる大名行列の動きが画面にリズムをもたらし、観る者の好奇心を満たしてくれる。

現在の静岡県三島市にあたる。早朝に宿を発つ旅人に光をあて、朝霧が立ちこめる情景を描き出している。奥に見える鳥居は三島明神（現在の三島大社）のもの。手前の駕篭の一行は三島から箱根方面へ、左側の3人の人影は沼津方面へと向かっている。背景描写には、あえて輪郭線を用いず、シルエットのみを捉えて描くことで、霧による湿潤な空気感、駕篭の一行を取り巻く空間の広がり、夜明け前の静寂さまでもが見事に表現されている。

現在の静岡県沼津市にあたる。母娘であろうか、2人の女性とお供の男性。その背後には、朝焼けをバックに雪を被る雄大な富士がそびえており、女性たちはその偉容に思わず足を止めている。富士の頂が画面をはみ出すように描かれた斬新な構図には、すでに人気を博していた葛飾北斎の《冨嶽三十六景》シリーズへの対抗心のようなものを感じとることができる。田畑に戯れる2羽の鶴が峻厳な富士の姿を和らげるアクセントにもなっている。

現在の静岡県静岡市清水区にあたる。薩埵峠は峠に入る前の波打ち際で荒波にさらわれる旅人も多く、「親知らず子知らず」と呼ばれ、東海道の難所の一つとして知られていた。海に面した切り立つ峠を越える際、突然背後に現われる富士の姿に旅人は感動したという。駿河湾越しに見える富士が美しく、急勾配な峠の輪郭とそこに生えた松のフォルムが共鳴するかのように配される。海上に浮かぶ船の四角い帆も画面に一定のリズムを与えている。

現在の静岡県藤枝市にあたる。画面左右から迫ってくる山の斜面の間を通る宇津之谷峠を農夫たちが行き交う。この峠道は桃山時代に豊臣秀吉が整備し、後に街道として利用されるようになったという。道の脇には作られた水路を勢いよく流れる岡部川が描かれている。向こうから歩いてくる3人の中の奥の人物を上半身のみ描き、3人が急な峠を登ってきた様子を巧みに描写している。右側の山中に『伊勢物語』で有名な「蔦の細道」がある。

現在の静岡県磐田市にあたる。天竜川の渡舟の様子が描かれている。天竜川の水は川瀬を2つに分け、東を大天竜、西を小天竜と呼んだ。画面手前が小天竜、奥が大天竜である。朝のまだ早い時間帯であろうか。遠景にはぼかしの技法を使い、朝霧にむせぶ天竜川の叙情をよく表現している。中州の向こうでは大名行列が何艘かの舟に乗り分けて、大天竜を渡り始めている。手前では渡舟を終えた船頭たちが一息つきながらその様子を眺めている。

現在の静岡県浜松市中区にあたる。街道脇の大きな杉の木の根元で、焚火をしながら暖をとる旅人たち。焚火から立ちのぼる煙が黒から白へ変化している様子も良く捉えている。刈入れの終わった田んぼに立て札の立つ松林があるが、これは「颯々松」と呼ばれた旧跡で、その昔、将軍足利義教が松の下で酒宴を催した際に「浜松の音はざざんざ」と謡ったことで有名になったという。右奥に見えるのが浜松の宿場で浜松城の天守閣も見える。

現在の静岡県湖西市にあたる。舞坂の渡し船「今切の渡し」を描いたもの。先を行く幔幕が張られた船は大名行列の一行を乗せた御座船である。時刻は夕刻頃と見られ、西の空が暮れようとしている。後続の舟には中間と呼ばれるお供たちが欠伸をしたり、身体を丸めて寝入る姿が見える。舟が向かう先に見えるのは新居の関所。この関所は幕府の直轄下にあり、取り調べが特に厳しいことで知られ、船着き場はこの関所の中に置かれていた。

現在の愛知県名古屋市熱田区にあたる。宮とは熱田神宮のこと。ここでは毎年5月5日に馬の塔といわれる、近郊の村々から馬を奉納するという神事が行われていた。本図では、裸馬に荒薦を巻き、人々が伴走しながら献馬する、俄馬の場面を描いている。奥の藍染めの半纏を着た一群と手前の赤い有松絞の半纏を着た一群が競り合う迫真のシーン。人馬が通り過ぎるスピード感を強調するように、鳥居の左側部分だけが画面の中に収まっている。

現在の三重県鈴鹿市にあたる。本シリーズの白眉の一枚。「白雨」とは夕立のこと。手前に置かれた急勾配の坂を必死に駆け登る駕籠かきと、転がり落ちるように下る旅人と農夫が描かれる。坂と直角に交差して降り注ぐ雨脚の描写、どす黒い雨雲を思わせる空のぼかし、雨の飛沫に煙る竹林の濃淡のシルエット、全てが激しい夕立の場面を見事に演出している。旅人の番傘に版元を示す「竹のうち」や「五十三次」とデザインされているのも面白い。

現在の三重県亀山市にあたる。《蒲原 夜之雪》に次ぐ雪景の代表作。斜めに画面を二分する大胆な構図がとられ、画面の左側には、朝焼けに染まる中、塵一つない冬の朝の澄んだ空気が見事に表現されている。右側上方には亀山宿の入口で、崖の上に築かれた京口門が姿を見せ、そこを目指し、極端な勾配を登る大名行列が描かれる。白と黒のモノトーンで描かれた雪景色のなか、空と行列をなす人々に施された彩色が画面に生気を与えている。

現在の三重県亀山市にあたる。鈴鹿の関は、畿内にある逢坂の関、不破の関と並んで三関といわれた。本陣とは参勤交代の大名が宿場で宿泊するところをいう。本陣には宿場の有力者の家があてられた。本図はその本陣を早朝に出発する様子を描いている。支度をする駕籠かきの表情が豊かで、手前の立て札の画面をはみ出す仕掛けも面白い。陣幕には定紋が張り巡らされているが、これは広重の実家、田中家の文字を組み合わせたものである。

現在の京都市東山区にあたる。江戸の日本橋を起点に始まった《東海道五拾三次》も京の玄関口といわれた三条大橋が終着点である。鴨川に架かる三条大橋。川向こうには京都の町並みが広がり、その背後には東山三十六峰が見える。本図で三条大橋の橋桁は木組みで描かれるが、実際は石製の橋杭だったという。橋上は駕籠持ちや飛脚、茶筅売り、被衣姿の女性、見物客など多種多様な人々で賑わい、古来より栄えてきた京都の活気を思わせる。

<p>The three kabuki theaters of Edo were all located in the Saruwakachō District. Hiroshige skillfully rendered light and dark with Western-style shading and linear perspective.<br /></p><br /><p>This is a print from One Hundred Famous Places of Edo, a series of masterpieces created by the early-19th-century ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige in his final years. The series consists of 120 prints, including a table of contents.<br /><br />The large full moon overhead reveals this to be a night scene. Shadows cast by the moonlight fall at the feet of the people. A vanishing point perspective is used to depict a straight road that runs without end into the distance.<br /><br />The Saruwakachō of the title refers to a district near Asakusa in present-day Tokyo which was apparently home to several theaters. The area appears to be bustling in this print that depicts a row of three theaters on the right side of the street, and a teahouse attached to a theater on the left.<br /><br />In addition to the bright moon, the print is studded with light spilling out of buildings, paper lanterns carried by pedestrians, and other sources of contrast between light and dark against the backdrop of the nighttime scene. These motifs seem to convey the hustle and bustle of a never-ending night in the city.</p>

<p>Set in the 11th month, this scene shows a cat on the windowsill of a bordello watching people return home from a festival at the Otori Jinja shrine.<br /></p><br /><p>This is a print from One Hundred Famous Places of Edo, a series the renowned ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige designed in the final years of his life in the 1850s. The series consists of 120 prints, including a table of contents.<br /><br />A cat sits at a latticed window. Outside, a procession of people is depicted heading towards Ōtori Shrine in Asakusa on a path between the rice fields. The use of the contrast between the large window in the foreground and the small motifs in the distance, such as the rice paddies and Mt. Fuji, to create a heightened sense of perspective is characteristic of One Hundred Famous Places of Edo, as is the vertical composition.<br /><br />In the eleventh month, Ōtori Shrine played host to the Tori no Ichi festival to pray for good fortune and prosperous business. People would flock to the shrine seeking good-luck charms, such as decorated bamboo rakes. The Tori no Ichi festival was a typical autumn event in Edo, present-day Tokyo.<br /><br />The scene is near Ōtori Shrine, and an ornate hairpin and hand towel, tools of the sex worker’s trade, lie about the room. Based on these details, we can infer that this is the Yoshiwara red light district near Asakusa. On closer inspection, the ornate hairpin on the floor is modeled on a bamboo-rake good luck charm. It is probably a souvenir of the Tori no Ichi festival. In the sky, dyed red by the setting sun, a flock of wild geese can be seen returning to their nests. The coming hours will be a busy time for sex workers in the Yoshiwara district. The cat staring out the window may represent the feelings of a sex worker longing for the outside world.<br /><br />This print inspires a wide variety of sentiments in those who see it.</p>

<p>This work portrays the Kiso Mountains beautifully covered in snow. On close examination, small figures traverse these mountains in Nagano and Gifu Prefectures, immersing the viewer into the gleaming, snowy landscape. Together with the Naruto whirlpools, this work is one part of a larger snow, moon, and flower trio.</p>

<p>This quiet, snowy scene depicts Kameido Tenmangu Shrine in present-day Koto City, Tokyo. Arched bridges cross the pond in the foreground, while a roofed corridor and a wisteria trellis can be seen further back. A prominent tourist spot in Edo, present-day Tokyo, the Tenmangu Shrine was renowned for its wisteria and plum blossoms. It was usually bustling with people, but naturally there are few visitors in this weather. The artist, Utagawa Hiroshige, is well-known for his depictions of landscapes, such as famous locations in Edo. This Famous Places of the Eastern Capital series is one of his representative works. The thickly falling snow seems to absorb all sound, even the footsteps of the passerby. The red of the buildings, bridges and plum blossoms stands out vividly against the chilly hues of the blue pond, grey sky, and white snow. Hiroshige was a master of woodblock prints, as revealed in the use of shading to achieve gradation effect in the sky and pond. He has fully demonstrated his expertise in this work.</p>

<p>This is a print from Hiroshige’s representative [Famous Places of the Eastern Capital] series. It depicts cherry blossoms under the moonlight in Nakanocho, the main street in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter.<br /></p>
