Nishiki-e
Nishiki-e is the generic term for the Ukiyo-e multi-colored woodblock prints which were developed and popularized during the Edo era.
Ukiyo-e was developed and popularized mainly during the Edo era. The Ukiyo-e multi-colored woodblock prints are generally referred to as Nishiki-e. These prints, which often consist of more than ten colors, are as beautiful as brocade and Nishiki-e became established.
In 1765, the Egoyomi (picture calendar) competition was popular among hobbyists of the Edo era. Among the participants was the Ukiyo-e artist, Harunobu Suzuki (1725-1770), who cooperated with engravers and printers to develop overprinting technology called Azuma Nishiki-e. This technology allowed the precise separation of many colors according to the Kento, alignment guide marks for the paper engraved on the printing woodblock, as it eventually developed Ukiyo-e as a commercial art. In this way, the Sumi-e paintings were brilliantly and beautifully colored like brocade, without having to paint them with safflowers or Tan.
Thereafter all Ukiyo-e belong to the genre of Nishiki-e.
