Suzuki Harunobu
A successful colored woodblock print artist noted for his prints of beautiful women 1725?-1770
Suzuki Harunobu was a woodblock print artist of the middle Edo period. His original surname was Hozumi, and he was commonly called Jirobei or Jihei. He is thought to have lived in Shirokabe-cho, Kanda (near the present-day JR Kanda Station).
It is believed he may have been a pupil of Nishimura Shigenaga, but this is not certain. He also studied the styles of the woodblock print artists Okumura Masanobu and Torii Kiyomitsu in Edo and Nishikawa Sukenobu in Kyoto. Eventually he created his own style for pictures of beautiful women—a style in which women are painted as slender and graceful. He was active for only ten years, from 1760 to 1770, but in that time he produced over 1,000 works.
He is known to have associated with Ota Nanpo and Hiraga Gennai and to have been on especially good terms with the shogunal retainer Okubo Kyosen. In 1765, at Kyosen's invitation, he participated in parties in which participants exchanged picture calendars, vying to create the most beautiful one. In this way he helped develop multicolored woodblock prints. By and by, these parties became popular for the multicolored prints (nishikie) they produced, and Harunobu gained fame as the number-one multicolored print artist.
He is also famous for his prints of well-known beauties of the town such as Kasamori Osen, and women of the licensed brothel district Yoshiwara in Edo. His point of pride was taking themes from classic works such as Kokin wakashu (Collection of Japanese Poems of Ancient and Modern Times), Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), and Ise monogatari (Tales of Ise), placing them in a contemporary setting, and depicting an elegant world reminiscent of the aesthetics of the imperial court.
Among his pupils were Shiba Kokan and Isoda Koryusai.
