西海道筋は、瀬戸内海航路が古来から開けた日本の重要航路であるため、江戸時代の初めに、いち早く航路図が刊行された。さらに九州からは、有明海や熊本から長崎を経て玄界灘を通るルート、南からには鹿児島から日向灘の諸港や城下町をへて伊予、周防灘方面に至る航路が生まれ、美しい風景は装飾用の屏風にもなった。〔No.598 地図と絵で見る海と船の福岡藩展〕
