Tsubouchi Shoyo was a literary man. Tsubouchi published Shosetsu shinzui (The Essence of the Novel) (1885-1886), Japan's first modern literary theory, and applied this theory in a novel titled Tosei shosei katagi (The Character of Today's Students) (1885-1886), both of which are historically important works of literature. He was also active in the field of theater. This page introduces Tsubouchi Shoyo as someone who loved theater, focusing on the materials of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum, Waseda University.
