MINAKATA Kumagusu (1867-1941), a natural historian and one of the founding fathers of folklore studies in Japan, was also a botanist specialized in the realm of so-called 'cryptogamic plants' including fungi, myxomycetes and algae. Minakata Kumagusu Archives was opened in 2006 in the city of Tanabe, Wakayama, at a site adjoining the former Minakata residence in which he spent the latter half of his life, and is working as an information center for Minakata Kumagusu where his collection of books, specimens and research materials, more than 25,000 in number, are conserved for ever and served for further academic activities for future generation.
