Tochigi Prefecture is located approximately 100 km north of Tokyo. Utsunomiya, its most populous city, can be reached in about one hour by Shinkansen. The northern Nasu and Nikko areas are home to a range of mountains with peaks more than 2,000 meters high, giving way to wide open plains in the south. Each area has its own distinct features, from the Nasu area, one of the premier highland resort areas in Japan, to the Nikko area and its UNESCO World Heritage "Shrines and Temples of Nikko" in the mountains, the central area with Utsunomiya as its transportation hub, thriving traditional crafts in the eastern area, and the southern area, which is nearest to Tokyo and once flourished as a commercial center.

大太刀 銘 備州長船倫光（国宝）・大太刀中身無銘（号 祢々切丸太刀）（国重文）をはじめとする名刀、下野国 男体山頂出土品（国重文）など山岳信仰に関する遺物が展示されています
家康公御着用の南蛮胴具足（国重文）や脇差 銘 勝光宗光（国重文）などの刀剣類、寛永の大造替に際して上棟祭に用いられた大工道具及び箱（国宝）、東照社縁起（国重文）などが展示されています
国宝１件・59点、重要文化財51件・1618点、重要美術品4件・7点を含め、約３万点の什宝を収蔵しており、風神・雷神像など常時50点ほどが展示されています
また、徳川記念財団の特別協力館として、徳川宗家に伝来する初代家康公以来の貴重な宝物の常設展示も併せて行われています
同館の公式キャラクターである「みーたん」のモデルとなったミミヅク土偶（後藤遺跡出土）、ニッポンサイ等が展示されています
