望遠鏡を使った初めて天体観測などの業績で有名なイタリアの科学者ガリレオ・ガリレイの著書で、1632年に出版された初版本です。３人の人物による対話形式で天動説と地動説について論じています。しかしローマのカトリック教会は、ガリレオがこの本で教義とは異なる地動説を論じたとして問題視し、ガリレオはいわゆる宗教裁判を受けることになりました。それでも本書は多くの人に読まれ、科学の発展に貢献しました。
