Description
Ukita Ikkei (1795-1859), one of the revived Yamato-e School painters of the late Edo Period, made this copy of Tosa Mitsunobu’s (yearsofbirthanddeathunknown) original portrait of Lord Madenokoji-Fujifusa. Ukita Ikkei’s real name was Yoshitane. He was active as a Royalist, but was arrested during the Ansei-era Purge. He died soon after he was released from prison. He studied Yamato-e painting techniques from Tosa Mitsuzane (1780-1852) and Tanaka Totsugen (1767-1823) and endeavored to revive the Yamato-e traditions of the olden days. The exhibit is quite a loyal copy of Mitsunobu’s original, although the edges of the tatami mats, faintly visible in the original, are omitted. The three shikishi-gata at the top say that Lord Fujifusa was a man of integrity, but that he lived an unhappy life.
