福岡藩士の毛利家へ伝来した脇差。由緒書によれば、毛利家は毛利元就の弟・元綱の嫡子元辰に始まる。元辰の嫡子が幼年より初代藩主黒田長政によって召し抱えられ、元辰の曽孫・元義の代に至って歴年の功績が認められ、中老格となる。〔第37回新収蔵品展〕
