アルミ製品は軽くて丈夫な特長から、明治時代中頃から軍用品がつくられはじめた。酸に弱いという欠点があった（梅干しを入れると穴があくこともあった）が、アルマイト加工が発明されたことで克服され、昭和時代に入ると「アルマイトの弁当箱」が一般にも普及した。〔第37回新収蔵品展〕
