網漁などで使われる道具で、目印の役割をもつ。木桶に竹と赤い布で作ったハッポウを据えて、網とつないで海上に浮かせる。ハッポウの内側に灯りを入れることで、夜間時にも使えることから網が仕掛けられていることを示す標識にもなっていた。ハッポウには所有者の船名などが書かれた。〔No.512 島とくらし―玄界島―〕
