玄界島は、漁業をおもに営む浦のひとつであったが、正保2（1645）年に外国船の監視強化のため遠見番所が置かれた。遠見山の山頂付近には、それらしき建物が描かれている。島は、軍事的な役割も担っていた。〔No.512 島とくらし―玄界島―〕
