Description
This chest was a sacred offering. An inscription on one side indicates that a Buddhist monk named Geia filled it with scriptures and presented it to Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine in Osaka in 1357. The surface depicts cranes perching on pines by the seashore — an image suggesting Suminoe, a scenic location closely associated with the shrine.
