Description
The potter Suwa Sozan I (1851–1922) mastered the art of Chinese celadon wares and created masterpieces comparable to classical pieces. He was appointed an Imperial Household Artist in 1917. This work was modeled on a Chinese vase with phoenix-shaped handles, known by the name of Bansei from the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279).
