Description
Amida Buddha, one of the most revered deities in Japan, presides over the Western Pure Land. Here, he forms a sacred hand gesture (mudra) indicating that he is leading the souls of the faithful to this heavenly paradise. His soft facial features and flowing robes reflect the artistic tastes of the nobility in Kyoto, the primary patrons of Buddhism when this sculpture was created in the 1100s.
