Description

Hijikata Torei (1741-1807) studied under Sô Shiseki (1715-86) and excelled at the Ming- and Qing-styles of painting of China. Although he was active in Kyoto, he became a retainer of the Tottori clan in 1798 (Kansei 10). Since this work is quite large in size in comparison with regular folding screens (J., byôbu), it was probably produced on special order.
