Description

The form of this vase emulates wine vessels (zun) found among ancient Chinese ritual bronzes, but the turtles forming the handles are a unique expression not found in zun. The vase was reportedly given as an offering to the buddha Yakushi (Skt. Bhaiṣajyaguru) enshrined at the West Round Hall of Hōryūji Temple by the Kyoto Sentō Imperial Palace in the early 1800s.
