関東大震災によって本所深川の家が焼失した河竹家は、その直後の大正12年（1923）10月半ばから15年（1926）2月23日まで「中渋谷宇田川八五〇番地」で過ごした。河竹家の本姓は吉村であり、表札には「河竹事」と小さく添えられている。竹問屋を商いながら市井の江戸学者として知られた三村竹清の筆。
