Nobunaga Oda
Nobunaga Oda was a Busho (military commander) of the Sengoku and Azuchi-momoyama eras. In spite of his aspiration to unify Japan, he took his own life during an attack by his subordinate, Mitsuhide Akechi, while staying at Honnoji Temple.
Nobunaga Oda was a busho (military commander) of the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. He was born in 1534, a son of Nobuhide Oda, the chief retainer of the Kiyosu Oda clan. Nobunaga’s father ruled the four lower counties of Owari Province.
Nobunaga took over the head of the family when he was 18, after his father’s death, and unified Owari Province by defeating the head families of the Oda clan, Kiyosu and Iwakura. In 1560, he defeated Yoshimoto Imagawa, the Daimyo (feudal lord) of Suruga Province in the Battle of Okehazama and formed an alliance with Ieyasu Tokugawa, the lord of Mikawa Province in 1562.
Entrusting the defense of the east to Ieyasu, he headed to Mino Province and defeated the Daimyo, Tatsuoki Saito, at Inaba Castle. He decided to headquarter Mino and changed its name to Gifu. Nobunaga also started using the personal red seal Tenka-fubu, which means ‘samurai forces govern the entire world’.
In 1568, he advanced to Kyoto with Yoshiaki Ashikaga, the brother of the former Shogun Yoshiteru Ashikaga, with the goal of installing Yoshiaki as the new Shogun. However, as Nobunaga set certain restrictions on Yoshiaki’s movements, they had a falling-out. Yoshiaki conspired with the Daimyos of Omi and Echizen, Nagamasa Azai and Yoshikage Asakura, as well as other anti-Nobunaga forces ? Kai’s Shingen Takeda, the warrior monks of Enryakuji Temple at Mt. Hiei, and the Ikko-Ikki rebels. After defeating those enemies, Nobunaga transferred his base to Azuchi (Omi Hachiman city in Shiga Prefecture) and built Azuchi Castle in 1576.
After dominating Osaka Ishiyama Honganji Temple and Kai-Takeda clans in 1580 and 1582, respectively, Nobunaga started his campaign toward the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. After receiving a request for a support army from Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nobunaga and his army began their march to Chugoku, but while he was staying at Honnoji Temple, he was attacked by his own subordinate Mitsuhide Akechi. Rather than dying at the hands of his betrayer, Oda Nobunaga took his own life.
