Ohtani Expedition
An academic investigation team formed by Kozui Ohtani, the 22nd Head Priest of the Nishi Honganji Temple.
Kozui Ohtani, the 22nd Head Priest of the Nishi Honganji Temple, formed an academic investigation team with the purpose of clarifying how Buddhism developed throughout central Asia. The team was dispatched three times between 1902 and 1914 in order to conduct research about the route of Buddhism as it spread. Buddhism is said to have come from India, via the Silk Road to China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
The first squad consisted of five members: Kozui Ohtani, Tesshin Watanabe, Kenyu Hori, Eryu Honda, and Koen Inoue. The second squad consisted of two members: Zuicho Tachibana and Eizaburo Nomura. The third squad consisted of two members: Zuicho Tachibana and Shoichiro Yoshikawa.
Photographs and records of the expedition can be found in the books including, indo Satsuei-cho (India Photographs) and Saiiki koko zufu (Western Archeology). In addition, materials brought back from Buddhist archeological sites were taken to Nirakuso, the second residence of Kozui Ohtani, located in Hyogo Prefecture. They were later dispersed.
