Gotoba-in onkuden (The Oral Teachings of Cloistered Emperor Gotoba)

A treatise on poetry by Emperor Gotoba of the early Kamakura period, consisting of 7 rules and critiques of 15 poets

Gotoba-in onkuden (The Oral Teachings of Cloistered Emperor Gotoba) is a treatise about poetry written by Emperor Gotoba early in the Kamakura period. The characters of the title can also be read Gotoba-in gokuden, and the work is sometimes referred to as Gotoba-in goshosoko, Gotoba-in gosho, Ento goshosoko, and Onto gosho. Ento (faraway island) in some of the above titles comes from the fact that Emperor Gotoba was exiled to Oki no Kuni (in today’s Shimane Prefecture) after the Jokyu War (1221). There are disagreements over whether the writing was completed after Gotoba was banished to Oki no Kuni or before, but the common view is that it was after. The treatise consists of 7 articles on rules and general knowledge about poetry writing for beginners, and critiques of 15 major poets of the late Heian period or later, starting with Tsunenobu Minamoto. The most highly praised among the poets are Shakua (also known as Shunzei Fujiwara) and Saigyo. In contrast, a significantly large section is dedicated to critiquing Teika Fujiwara, editor of Shin kokin wakashu (New Collection of Waka Poems Ancient and Modern), much of it is negative in nature, and this is considered important in understanding the relationship between Emperor Gotoba and Teika. The treatise contains valuable information for studying Japanese waka poetry and its theories. The oldest copy is in the collection at Keio University Library.
