The dragon is a legendary creature that is well-known throughout Asia. Images of Japanese dragons Ryu were based on a combination of religious beliefs and legends from other countries, and ancient Japanese gods, such as Orochi (The Snake God) and Yamata no Orochi (The Eight-Headed and Eight-Tailed Serpent). Their perception was also heavily influenced by the Indian snake god, Naga and Chinese dragons in Yin-yang philosophy. Owing to the belief that the Ryujin (Japanese dragon gods) controls water, prayers are offered to dragons to manage the rain as needed for rain-dependent farming, including rice cultivation. People often see dragon images in natural phenomena, like thunder and lightning storms, as well as in flooding rivers.
Hiroshige Utagawa is one of the leading Ukiyo-e artists of the Edo era. His painting, Unryru-zu, shows a dragon rising among the clouds. The rising dragon is called Nobori-ryu. This dragon is often featured in Ukiyo-e and other Japanese style paintings.
