Jakuchu Ito

Common name for Jisho-ji Temple built by the eighth Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimasa Ashikaga, a space characterized by the wabi and sabi aesthetics of transience and imperfection displaying the sensibilities of Higashiyama Culture. Contains many paintings by Jakuchu Ito.

Originally the villa of the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, it was converted into a Zen temple in accordance with his will after his death. Features a shariden (reliquary hall) with gold leaf applied to both its interior and exterior. Contains many paintings by Jakuchu Ito.

A shrine located on Mount Zozu in Kagawa Prefecture’s Nakatado that offers protection for marine transport and fishermen. Contains a floral mural by Jakuchu Ito, Hanamaru-zu (“Painting of Flowers”).

幸田露伴 著,大鐙閣

「若冲居士寿蔵碣銘」（幸田露伴『日本史伝文選 下巻』所収）。「斗米庵若冲居士寿蔵碣銘」は、若冲と親交のあった京都・相国寺の大典禅師が若冲生前に撰んだ墓碑で、若冲に関する貴重な伝記史料である。

若冲は40歳で家業を弟に譲り、絵画制作に専心したとされる。「花鳥図押絵貼屏風」は若冲が40代半ば頃に描いたと考えられ、若冲のごく早期の作品である。

若冲が晩年を過ごした京都・石峰寺を描いた作品。若冲は、五百羅漢像等の石仏を石峰寺の裏山に建造した。石仏は建造当時、1,000体以上に及んだといわれる。

<p>The artist Ito Jakuchu used a woodblock rubbing technique to achieve a bold contrast in this collection of 48 monochrome images of flowers, insects, and vegetables.<br /></p><br /><p>Ito Jakuchu has depicted several flowering plants, vegetables and insects using black and white only. Jakuchu was active in Kyoto during the 18th century. He was renowned for his vivid paintings of flowers and birds, but his graphical sensibilities are also apparent in monochrome works like this one.<br /><br />Exquisite Flowers from the Realm of the Immortals is a collection of 48 drawings. Jakuchu produced it when he was 53 using a technique called taku-hanga, or woodblock ink rubbing. The white sections correspond to concave sections carved into the woodblock. Moistened paper would be pressed against the woodblock, with ink then applied to the surface in a manner that left the concave sections untouched. Jakuchu is said to have drawn the original sketches and carved them onto the woodblocks himself.<br /><br />The white motifs rise up dramatically against the black background to form a bold contrast between light and dark. The distinctive atmosphere of the work is enhanced by a meticulous attention to detail, with Jakuchu even punctuating the leaves with holes left by insects, for example. The realm mentioned in the title is where the Taoist immortals live, while the exquisite flowers refers to flowers as beautiful as jewels. As these words suggest, this is a work filled with a sense of unearthly beauty.</p>
