Nijo Castle
A castle in Kyoto built by Tokugawa Ieyasu
Nijo Castle is a castle in Nakagyo Ward of Kyoto. The official name is the Moto Rikyu Nijo-jo (Former Detached Palace Nijo Castle). In 1994 it became registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a "Historic Monument of Ancient Kyoto."
Throughout history, there have been several castles named Nijo Castle, including the residence of the thirteenth Ashikaga shogun Yoshiteru and the residence of the fifteenth Ashikaga shogun Yoshiaki built by Oda Nobunaga. In addition to these two castles, there is also the Nijo Castle newly built by Oda Nobunaga. His son Nobutada was later killed in this castle during the Honno-ji Incident, in which Nobunaga was assassinated.
The current Nijo Castle is a lowland castle that began construction when Tokugawa Ieyasu went to the capital in 1601, and that was completed two years later. In 1626, Emperor Go-Mizunoo visited the castle, and a major renovation was carried out prior to that. The Building Magistrate Kobori Enshu and others built a magnificent hall and garden.
At the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, the fifteenth Tokugawa shogun Yoshinobu declared the transfer of power back to the emperor in Nijo Castle.
The castle tower was destroyed by lightning and a subsequent fire in 1750, and in 1788 it was caught in the Great Fire of Tenmei and the Honmaru Palace was also destroyed. The current Honmaru Palace is where the former palace Katsura no Miya was relocated in 1896.
Currently, 6 buildings, including the carriage porch of Ninomaru Palace and the large hall, are designated as national treasures. Also, 22 buildings, including Karamon, the symbol of Nijo Castle, and a total of 1,016 sliding-door paintings of Ninomaru Palace have been designated as important cultural properties. The sliding-door paintings were made for the occasion of Emperor Go-Mizunoo's imperial visit, and were done by Kano Tanyu and other Kano School painters. The Ninomaru Garden (also known as the Hachijin Garden) designed by Kobori Enshu has been designated as a special scenic spot.
