Rakuchu Rakugai-zu: Views in and Around the City of Kyoto
Rakuchu Rakugai-zu are paintings that depict the landscape of Kyoto and its suburbs from a bird's eye view.
Rakuchu Rakugai-zu (Views In and Around the City of Kyoto) depicts the landscape of Kyoto and its suburbs from a bird's eye view. There are 30 to 40 existent paintings in this style. The art form was begun in the late Muromachi era, and was written about “Incredibly valuable” with surprise about the appearance of Rakuchu Rakugai-zu for the first time in the journal Sanetaka Koki, which was written by the nobleman Sanetaka Sanjonishi on December 22, 1506.
Rakuchu Rakugai-zu generally takes the form of a pair of six-panel folding screens ? the right screen depicting scenery inside the capital, with Higashiyama in the east of the Kamogawa River in the background, and the left screen depicting scenery inside the capital with Kitayama to Nishiyama in the background. The paintings are also used as historical material to help understand the history of Kyoto, since the landmarks of the time are drawn abundantly, and the buildings change depending on the time of painting.
The oldest surviving example is Rekihaku Kohon held at the National Museum of Japanese History. In addition to the Ashikaga Shogun's residence Yanagi no Gosho, completed in 1525, it depicts Seiganji Temple and the temples of Rokkaku-do that were destroyed by the Tenbun Hokke no Ran (Tenbun Hokke War) in 1536. It is thought to have been drawn in the early 16th century.
Until the Sengoku period, Rakuchu Rakugai-zu was a major theme along with flower and bird painting, but as Kyoto lost political importance in the Edo era, the Kano group withdrew from that particular field of art. Since then, unknown town painters began to paint Kyoto’s beautiful theaters and the red-light districts.
