Ningyo: Mermaids

The mermaid is a legendary, water-dwelling creature, with the upper body of a human, and the lower body of a fish. Mermaid folklore exists throughout Japan.

This legendary creature lives in the water, and has a human-like upper body with the lower body like that of a fish. According to Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan), a rare fish was discovered in Settsu, modern-day Osaka, in 619. This is the oldest description of a mermaid in Japan.

Mermaid legends were prevalent throughout various regions of Japan.

In 1805, an illustration of a mermaid caught on the coast of Ecchu Province, now Toyama Prefecture, was printed on a kawaraban newspaper. According to the report, this mermaid was killed by 450 guns. In Ainu folklore, people say that consuming the flesh of the ainusokki, a mermaid-like creature that lived in the Uchiura Bay in Hokkaido, would grant a long life. Another legend tells of Yao Bikuni, an 800-year old priestess-mermaid who was granted 1000 years of life after eating the flesh of mermaids.
