Kosode (Short-Sleeved Kimono)
Kosode is a garment that evolved into what is now known as Japan’s national clothing, the kimono. Beginning in the Kamakura era, it spread throughout society and was worn by everyone from members of the samurai class to the common people.
Kosode is a short-sleeved garment worn for daily activities. The sleeves have openings at the shoulder seam below the armpit for ventilation, and the collar can be adjusted to the wearer. Originally its primary use was as an undergarment, but when hakama was no longer worn over top, it later began to be used as an overgarment. This became what is now known as Japan’s national clothing, the kimono.
The name ‘Kosode’ has been used since the end of the Heian era, and was established as unique clothing due to the rise of the samurai class. This garment symbolized one’s status by the establishment of the samurai administration. Since the Kamakura era, short-sleeved kimono that had been dyed were also a way of establishing social classes. Since then, the attire spread throughout society and was shared from the samurai class to the common people.
For a high-status samurai, the basic dress code was a short-sleeved kimono made of cotton and silk, a Kataginu, and Hakama. Kataginu is a sleeveless, woven jacket with exaggerated shoulders that was established as a garment for daily wear dring the war period. On the other hand, wives of high-ranking samurai wore several layers of Kosode with Sokutai, a fastened narrow waistband, and large Kosode with beautiful sleeves on top. In addition, the short-sleeved kimono of the common people were made of simple, woven fabric and thick linen. They were regularly worn for labor-intensive work and daily life.
