Haniwa

Haniwa is a type of earthenware made to be placed on the kofun (tumuli) tombs during the Kofun era. It was made in various shapes, including cylinders, people and animals.

Haniwa is a type of earthenware made of clay which was created to line up on the kofun (tumuli) tombs. The origin of Haniwa is said to have been during the late Yayoi era. Haniwa were used as ceremonial vessel stands, offered at the graves of the leaders of the Kibi district. Following this, Haniwa that were modelled after houses, people, animals and tools began to appear.

There are several theories on how Haniwa were created, but the cylindrical Haniwa is said to have served as a protective barrier when arranged in certain areas. There are also theories that the figurative Haniwa represents either the reproduction of one’s lifetime or a ritual of succession to the throne.

There is a description of Haniwa in the history book, Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan). During this time, burials were carried out and the guardians of the Emperor (known as the Great King at the time) were buried alive with the intent that they would serve in the afterlife. However, Emperor Suinin thought this was too cruel and banned the custom. An individual that went by the name of Nomi no Sukune proposed that instead of burying people, Haniwas were burned to be completed, and placed within the burial mound. This practice was adopted; however, there are records of the cylindrical Haniwa having appeared earlier than Haniwa figures. Furthermore, the practice of (living) human burial in Japan has not been confirmed.

  • Zenpo koenfun had multiple haniwa set up along their tumuli and banks. The production of haniwa is thought to have continued up through the end of the era of zenpo koenfun use.

  • Made in the Jomon period (around 14,000–1,000 BC) by firing clay, the term dogu refers to earthen dolls in a broad sense, and haniwa, too, were once referred to as haniwa dogu.

  • Jomon Doki refers to earthenware pottery which was made and used during the Jomon era. They were widely used in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, and their style and patterns varied depending on the region and time they were made.

    垂仁天皇32年に、土師（はじ）氏の祖である野見宿禰（のみのすくね）の提案に従い、日葉酢媛命の墓に「埴輪」を立てたとの記述がある。

    『衝口発（しょうこうはつ）』は、江戸中期の考古学者藤貞幹（とうていかん　1732-1797）による史論。この中で貞幹は、「河内国石河郡山中古塚」から出土した「埴物（埴輪）」を模写し、古代の衣服について考察している。

    文政8年7月8日に行われた耽奇会という文人の会合で、龍珠館という人物が出陳した馬型埴輪。文政3年6月に大和国葛下郡土庫村から出土したという。『耽奇漫録』は、江戸時代の考証随筆。耽奇会に好事家が持ち寄った古書画・古器財などの図に考説を添えたものの集録。

    明治19年（1886）に、人類学者、坪井正五郎によって日本初の古墳の学術調査が行われた足利古墳の調査報告書。複数の埴輪が出土したことが報告されている。
