Furuta Oribe

A Japanese warrior and tea ceremony master during the Warring States period and the early Edo period, who, as successor to the tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu, achieved great success in the art of tea ceremony

1543-1615

Furuta Oribe was a Japanese warrior and tea ceremony master who lived during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the early Edo period. His tea ceremony teacher was Sen no Rikyu, and he admirably succeeded as Rikyu's successor. He was born in Mino Province (today's Gifu Prefecture). His birth name was Shigenari, and his common name was Sasuke. There was a period of his life when he called himself Kageyasu. Other names by which he was known are Sooku and Insai. Shun'oku Soen, the head priest of Daitoku Temple, bestowed upon him the Buddhist name Kinpo. The name Oribe is believed to have come from his official title of governor of Oribe Province, but this title together with his family name "Furuta Oribe no kami" (Furuta, governor of Oribe) is mentioned only in later historical documents, such as Taiko ki (Biography of Hideyoshi Toyotomi) and Hankan pu (Genealogy of the Protectors of the Shogunate), while his personal signature reads "Furuta Oribe no suke" (Furuta, Oribe assistant).

In his career, Oribe first served the Toki clan of Mino Province. He then went on to serve Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi's death, Oribe joined the Tokugawa side. From a young age, he loved the tea ceremony, and he studied it under Sen no Rikyu. From around 1582, he gradually began to distinguish himself in this regard. In Tennoji yakai ki (Tea Ceremony Gatherings at Tenno Temple), by Tsuda Sokyu, in an entry dated October 5, 1583, the name Furuta Sasuke appears together with the names of other outstanding disciples of Sen no Rikyu: Imai Sokun, Matsui Yukan, Takayama Ukon, and Shibayama Kenmotsu. The famous Musashi abumi no fumi, a letter that Rikyu sent to Oribe while the latter was on the battlefield in the Siege of Odawara, speaks about the relationship between master and disciple. In February 1591, when Rikyu was placed under house arrest in Sakai, only Oribe and Hosokawa Sansai proceeded to the boat landing in Yodo to bid him farewell. The Matsui Bunko Collection contains the letter (addressed to Matsui Yasuyuki, governor of Sado and retainer of Sakai) that Rikyu wrote to express his gratitude on that occasion.

After Rikyu's death, Oribe became preeminent in tea ceremony circles in Japan, and he succeeded Rikyu as Hideyoshi's tea ceremony master. Later he instructed numerous feudal lords, including Kobori Enshu, in the art of the tea ceremony, and served as tea ceremony instructor to Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada, thus solidifying his position as a master of daimyo-style tea ceremony (the style practiced by feudal lords and members of the warrior class). Calamity soon beckoned, however. During the Battle of Osaka in 1615, Oribe was suspected of communicating secretly with the enemy in Osaka. He was ordered to commit seppuku, and on June 11 his life came to an end when he did so at the Kobata residence in Fushimi District, Kyoto.

Through the art of tea ceremony, Oribe established an extensive circle of friends that included numerous courtiers, feudal lords, and intellectuals, among them, such individuals as Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kobori Enshu, Tokugawa Hidetada, Hon'ami Koetsu, Ueda Soko, and Shimizu Dokan. Records also indicate that in his late years he formed a friendship with Konoe Nobutada through the art of linked verse. Furthermore, as the foremost authority in the art of the tea ceremony, he inspired innovation and an original Oribe style in the design of tea rooms, traditional Japanese gardens, and ceramics. Oribeware, a style of earthenware that carries his name, is well known as a superb example of Momoyama period ceramics. However, how involved Oribe was in the creation of Oribeware remains unclear. His grave is in Kosho Temple, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto.
