Setsubun (Bean-throwing Festival) takes place the night before Risshun (first day of spring). On that night in every house, everyone says, "The demon is outside. The fortune is inside”. Afterwards, they throw beans throughout their houses. This is a seasonal ritual that drives out demons and evil spirits.
The kanji character for mame (beans) can also be written as characters meaning ‘demon's eyes’ (魔目), and ‘killing demons’ (魔滅), and one legend says that Bishamonten (one of the Seven Gods of Luck) told people that the beans are magical, and they have to throw them directly into the demons' eyes to kill demons who used to live in Kurama Mountain in Kyoto. Good fortune is promised to whoever eats the beans. The number of beans eaten should be the same as the person’s age.
During Setsubun, the head of an Iwashi (roasted sardine) is displayed at the entrance of each house on a sharp Hiiragi (holly sprig). Its strong smell keeps away evil spirits.
Hiiragi's origin can be traced back to ancient China. It is used in a religious ritual called Tsuina (expelling demons) to cast away evil spirits and welcome the new year. During Tsuina rituals, the demon banishers, Hososhi and Najin, chase away evil with bows, arrows, and shields; this is similar to bean-throwing.
