Kageyasu Takahashi
An astronomer and geographer of the mid-Edo period who oversaw the surveying work of Tadataka Ino, and who completed the Ino Maps
1785–1829
Kageyasu Takahashi was an astronomer and geographer of the mid-Edo period. Known commonly as Sakuzaemon and under the courtesy names Shisho, Banbu, and Kanso. After the death of his father, Yoshitoki Takahashi, Kageyasu Takahashi took over the post of astronomer to the Shogunate. Upon the order of the Shogunate, he worked on the creation of a world map and in 1810 completed Shintei bankoku zenzu (Newly Revised Map of the World). As an official astronomer, he supervised the work of Tadataka Ino, who was engaged in a project to survey the coastline of Japan that had been underway for some time. After Ino’s demise, Kageyasu took over drawing the maps, and in 1821 he completed Dainihon enkai yochi zenzu (Maps of Coastlines of Great Japan). He was proficient in Dutch and was given the name Globius. After discussions with the Shogunate, Kageyasu established the Bansho-Wage Goyo (Government Office for Translation of Barbarian Books) and led projects for translating Dutch books. He communicated with Philipp Franz von Siebold, a German physician, botanist and traveler, when Siebold visited the Shogunate at Edo, and the two exchanged academic materials. However, after it was discovered that he had given forbidden maps of Japan to Siebold, Kageyasu was arrested in 1828 for his involvement in what later became known as the Siebold Incident, and he died in prison the following year.
