Asagao (Morning Glory)

Asagao is an annual of the Convolvulaceae Morning Glory family. It was a popular flower for gardening, and exhibitions were held frequently.

Asagao is an annual of the Convolvulaceae (Morning Glory) family. According to one theory, it originated in either tropical Asia or tropical America. It is to have already been cultivated in Japan during the Nara era.

In the Edo era, the samurai and farmers were to be separated according to a policy called Heino-bunri. As a result of the policy, the samurai were forcibly removed to towns on the outskirts of the castle areas, along with the craftsmen and merchants. Among the urban-dwellers, gardening became a popular hobby. At first, different kinds of henka-asagao, variants of the modern asagao (morning glory), were cultivated in Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo during the Bunka and Bunsei periods. They had different leaves and blossoms from the typical round-blossomed asagao that we see today.

Writers and gardeners who enjoyed such variations competed against each other with their highly praised henka-asagao at exhibitions, called Hana-awase, where unique variations were recorded in illustrated catalogs of asagao as well as on ranking lists. It is thought that asagao cultivation became popular because of its reasonable price for commoners and its easily mutable nature.

During the Koka and Ansei periods and the Meiji era, henka-asagao gardening continued to gain in popularity, with more and more people enjoying and competing across different regions and social classes.

During the Edo era, asagao sellers peddled their wares from a pole strung across their shoulders. Every June, from early in the morning to the early afternoon, which is when asagao blooms, sellers walked throughout Edo town with baskets full of unglazed ceramic flowerpots.
