Shotoku Taishi (Prince Shotoku)
Shotoku Taishi (Prince Shotoku) served as Empress Suiko's regent during the Asuka era. He is said to have left splendid political achievements, and was also responsible for the rise of Buddhism in Japan.
Shotoku Taishi (Prince Shotoku), formerly known as Umayado no oji, was said to have served as Empress Suiko's regent. He established the Twelve Level Cap and Rank System and promoted the Seventeen-Article Constitution to implement a centralized political system. He also restored relations with the Sui dynasty of China by sending messengers. Shotoku Taishi was also responsible for the rise of Buddhism in Japan.
When he was between the age of 14 and 15, Shotoku Taishi and Soga no Umako fought against an anti-Buddhism rival called Mononobe no Moriya. To honor their victory, he built Shitennoji Temple. Later on, he wrote Sangyo Gisho (the Annotated Commentaries on the Three Sutras). These three commentaries were about Hokke (the Lotus Sutra), Yuima (the Vimalakirti Sutra), and Shoman (the Srimala Sutra). In the Seventeen-Article Constitution, he stated that we should respect those three sutras. To contribute more to the rise of Buddhism, Shotoku Taishi also built the Ikarugadera Temple.
Due to his numerous achievements, people often thought he was superhuman – especially after reading his biography. In Shotoku Taishi Denryaku (Prince Shotoku's biography), legend says that he teleported to China during the Tang dynasty and obtained the Lotus Sutra while he was mediating in Yumedono – one of the buildings of Horyuji Temple – and claimed that he obtained it from his previous life. Legend also says that Shotoku Taishi was the incarnation of no other than Guze Kannon (Nyoirin Kannon, the Lord of Compassion). Another legend states that later on, he lived another life as Emperor Shomu and created the Daibutsu Statue. Yet another legend suggests that Kobo Daishi, the founder of the Shingon religious sect, was the incarnation of Shotoku Taishi, which was said to be another opportunity to spread Taishi Shinko (the worship of Prince Shotoku).
