ロシアの海軍士官ゴロウニンが、文化8年（1811）南千島海域を測量中，国後島で日本側に捕らえられ，松前で２年あまり獄中生活を送った際の抑留生活の詳細な記録を綴った書。卓抜な日本論ともなっている。ゴロウニンは、2年後に高田屋嘉兵衛らと交換に釈放された。本書内にゴロウニンの肖像の口絵あり。
