Description
応仁年間（1467〜68）の本堂大改修の際、狩野派の秀山信尹〔しゅうざんのぶただ〕により上下竜2頭が描かれ本堂外〔げ〕陣の大天井に組み込まれたもので、畳10畳分の大きさがある。その竜頭の下で手を打つと、天井裏に共鳴してみごとな竜鳴〔りゅうめい〕を発する。
日本の東西南北4ヶ所にあった鳴竜〔なきりゅう〕を「日本四方鳴竜」と称し、東は日光山、西は京都相国寺〔しょうこくじ〕、北は青森竜泉寺（焼失）、南は信濃当山のものを呼んだと言われている。
