Writing Box with Design of Paulownia and Phoenix in Maki-e Lacquer 桐鳳凰蒔絵硯箱きりほうおうまきえすずりばこ
Description
長方形、角丸、被蓋造（かぶせふたづくり）の硯箱で、内外共に総体金梨子地（きんなしじ）に平蒔絵と高蒔絵で表す。蓋甲には桐鳳凰、見返しは松瀧山水、見込みは竹としている。蓋甲は、水辺の桐に雌雄の鳳凰で、小笹や沢瀉も描かれる。桐花に金金貝（かながい）、凰の尾羽と岩には銀金貝があしらわれ、桐の幹や凰の体、岩や雲に金・銀の切金（きりかね）が置かれる。見返しでは州浜に銀金貝、岩や雲に金・銀の切金が置かれ、瀧は銀蒔絵としている。見込みには硯石と金銅製七々子地に蛇目九曜紋（じゃのめくようもん）を高彫（たかぼり）した水滴が据えられている。鳳凰は、鳳が雄で凰が雌の中国で創造された霊鳥。『詩経』では、鳳凰が鳴き、高岡で睥睨（へいげい）すると、梧桐が生えてくるとあり、また梧桐でなければ棲まず、竹の実でなければ食べないとする。日本では、『餝抄』の天養21年（1144）の条に、天皇が「黄櫨染 文竹桐鳳凰」の御袍を常に着たことが記され、鳳凰は天子を表すものと考えられている。この硯箱でも蓋表に桐鳳凰、見込みに竹が描かれているのはこうした背景がある。

The Japanese Council of Art Museums
The Japanese Council of Art Museums (JCAM) supports the accomplishment of mission of art museums and seeks to assist art museums in fully basing their activities in a social context. The organization holds an annual meeting, memorial forums at annual meetings, lectures, Curatorial Study Meetings, and Study Group activities every year. The information and reports generated by these various activities are then expected to be shared with member museums, the greater art-related world and the general public. JCAM was founded in 1952 with the aim of providing a forum for art museums in Japan to think and act together. The organization was registered as a general incorporated association on April 1st, 2020 and includes over 450 members (full members, individual members and supporting members).
