Description
本作は1863年と67年に公開された現在消息不明の油彩画と本シリーズの《ジプシーたち》（No.4）に基づいている。原作であったと思われる油彩画は確認できないが、公開された当時、その背景に描かれた「頭をのけぞらせて口の中へ水差しの水を流し込んでいる人物」が賞賛された新聞記事が残っている。また原作の断片であるとの説もある、《水を飲む人》（シカゴ美術研究所蔵）という油彩画作品も現存し、当初、《ジプシーたち》と同様に背景に描かれていた少年のモティーフに対して、マネが強い愛着を抱いていたことが窺える。

The Japanese Council of Art Museums
The Japanese Council of Art Museums (JCAM) supports the accomplishment of mission of art museums and seeks to assist art museums in fully basing their activities in a social context. The organization holds an annual meeting, memorial forums at annual meetings, lectures, Curatorial Study Meetings, and Study Group activities every year. The information and reports generated by these various activities are then expected to be shared with member museums, the greater art-related world and the general public. JCAM was founded in 1952 with the aim of providing a forum for art museums in Japan to think and act together. The organization was registered as a general incorporated association on April 1st, 2020 and includes over 450 members (full members, individual members and supporting members).
