「神奈川沖浪裏」「凱風快晴」とともに、冨嶽三十六景のシリーズの三役のひとつに数えられる。白雨とは夕立のこと。快晴の山頂に対し、山麓に下ると漆黒の闇に包まれ強烈に走る一瞬の稲妻が描かれ、そこに激しい雨が降っていることがイメージできる。自然に超越して、静と動をあわせ持つ、富士の雄大さ見事に表現された一枚である。『富嶽百景』「夕立の不二」には、その裾野の村に視点が移動した光景が描かれている。今日のように飛行機が無い時代にあって、富士を様々な視点からイメージできた北斎の力量に驚くばかりである。この「山下白雨」は、主板、色板の板木に欠落部分があるものが多く、初摺りのイメージを残すものが少ないといわれる。山頂の中心部分の茶色の点の欠落や、落款の「筆」の下部部分の欠落などが見られるものもあるが、この版は、初摺りに近いイメージを残している貴重なものである。後摺りの版では、その裾野に松の木が加えられたものもあり面白い。

The Japanese Council of Art Museums
The Japanese Council of Art Museums (JCAM) supports the accomplishment of mission of art museums and seeks to assist art museums in fully basing their activities in a social context. The organization holds an annual meeting, memorial forums at annual meetings, lectures, Curatorial Study Meetings, and Study Group activities every year. The information and reports generated by these various activities are then expected to be shared with member museums, the greater art-related world and the general public. JCAM was founded in 1952 with the aim of providing a forum for art museums in Japan to think and act together. The organization was registered as a general incorporated association on April 1st, 2020 and includes over 450 members (full members, individual members and supporting members).
