Mount Fuji 神嶽不二山しんがくふじさん

Description

「紀元二千六百筆」との年記があることから昭和15年（1940）の作であることが分かる。同年は神武天皇の即位から2600年を当たる節目の年であることから各地で記念の奉祝展が多く開催された。大観は同年の4月、日本橋の高島屋と三越の2会場でそれぞれ「横山大観紀元二千六百年奉祝記念展」を開催し、そこに《海に因む十題》《山に因む十題》として各々10点ずつを出品し、売上金の50万円を全て陸海軍に献納したことは有名である。本作もこうした奉祝ムードの中で、同様の展覧会もしくは個人の依頼によって描かれたものと思われる。大型の画面に淡墨と胡粉を使い、靄の中からセピア調に浮かび上がらせた富士の姿は壮麗で神々しさすらおぼえる。富士の山頂の形状からすると、南西側の静岡方面から見た富士と思われる。

The Japanese Council of Art Museums

　The Japanese Council of Art Museums (JCAM) supports the accomplishment of mission of art museums and seeks to assist art museums in fully basing their activities in a social context. The organization holds an annual meeting, memorial forums at annual meetings, lectures, Curatorial Study Meetings, and Study Group activities every year. The information and reports generated by these various activities are then expected to be shared with member museums, the greater art-related world and the general public. 　JCAM was founded in 1952 with the aim of providing a forum for art museums in Japan to think and act together. The organization was registered as a general incorporated association on April 1st, 2020 and includes over 450 members (full members, individual members and supporting members).
