奈良公園の南にある新薬師寺は、７４７年に光明皇后が聖武天皇の病気回復を願って建てた寺院です。本尊の国宝・薬師如来坐像の周りには、国宝・十二神将立像が配されています。天平時代に作られた塑像で、江戸時代の地震で１体が壊れたものの、残る１１体は１２００年たった今もその姿を留めています。
