新選組は京都焼き討ちを画策する尊王攘夷派浪士らを探すため、夜の捜索を行いました。３時間にわたる必死の捜索の末三条小橋の池田屋を突き止めて突入、激しい斬り合いを演じました。現在、池田屋の跡には小さな碑が立っています。
