博多祇園山笠は、およそ７７０年前、博多で流行した疫病を払うために、町人に担がれた僧侶が町中を清めた回ったことが起原とされています。祭りの最後を締めくくる「追い山」で、重さ１トンあまりもある「舁き山」をはっぴに締め込み姿の男衆が担いで全長およそ５キロのコースを豪快に駆け抜けます。
