Description
Sea cows (Sirenia) look like whales because they lack hind legs, but they are mammals closer to elephants and Desmostylus. Sirenia currently comprise dugongs and manatees. Sea cows are herbivorous, which is unusual for aquatic mammals. They inhabit shallow waters because the aquatic plants they feed on are there for photosynthesis. Numata sea cows lived from 9.2 million to 7.3 million years ago. The name Numata kaigyu (Numata sea cow) is not an official Japanese name; it's something of a nickname. The scientific name is Dusisiren sp. Dusisiren is a genus, and the specific species is unknown.
