Saddle with a Lion and Peonies 獅子牡丹平文鞍ししぼたんひょうもんくら

Description

During Japan’s Warring States period (1467–1615), samurai saddles evolved to meet the demands of warfare. They were built from thicker pieces of wood for greater durability and adorned with new styles of decoration. This example has gold plates depicting a Chinese lion with peonies, a design representing strength and good fortune.
