Description
Picnicking with elaborately designed food boxes was a favorite pastime of the nobility and samurai. The stackable food boxes here are decorated with a crane and turtle, both traditional symbols of longevity. This design was created by carving the wood and painting it with red-tinted lacquer, a technique inspired by Chinese lacquerware.
