画中に葦手の手法で書き込まれた文字から、これが『源氏物語』初音の帖にみえる歌「年月を松にひかれてふる人に けふ鶯の初音きかせよ」を主題とした意匠であることが知られる。慶賀の意を表わした、正月にふさわしいデザインである。
