Description
This box was used to store a mirror of polished bronze. The lid features two motifs that were associated with good fortune — a Chinese lion and blooming peonies. To create these motifs, an artisan sprinkled gold powder onto wet lacquer, carefully adjusting the amount of powder to create gradations in the foreground.
