Sake Bottle with a Man's Face 褐釉鬚徳利 「讃窯」印銘かつゆうひげとくり

Description

Called “bearded bottles” because of their surface decoration, alcohol flasks like this were originally made in Frechen, Germany. Dutch traders brought them to Japan, where they were copied at the San kilns on the island of Shikoku. They held an exotic, foreign appeal for the Japanese who purchased them.
